Animation Writer

Animation Writer is a program run in collaboration between Seoul Indie-AniFest and Seoul Indie Animation Academy(SIACA)! We created this space to build a culture where people can talk openly about animation — with warmth when it calls for it, and with honest criticism when it doesn't. Participants who have a genuine love for animation and aren't afraid to speak their mind will go through a series of educational sessions and share thoughtful reviews of films screened and awarded at Seoul Indie-AniFest2026.

Curriculum
Program / Curriculum
Lecture 1 Talking to Criticism: Reading Animation Reviews 1

- A blind group critique of the reviews submitted with each participant's program application.
- Reading through different takes on a range of films together, diverse perspectives come to light — and the unique appeal of each piece of writing starts to show itself.

Lecture 2 Talking to Criticism: Reading Animation Reviews 1 (continued) & Talking to Directors: Imaginary Q&A

- Wrapping up the first round of review reading from Session 1. - Directors are conjured up through an imaginary Q&A, and their stories get to be heard.
- Looking at animation from multiple angles — as an audience member, as a critic, and as a fellow creator — opens up a richer, more layered conversation with the work.

Lecture 3 Talking to Directors: Imaginary Q&A

- Continuing the imaginary Q&A from Session 2.
- Chosen films and directors come alive as their stories unfold, sparking a real back-and-forth energy in the room.
- Thinking through what makes a good question (and how not to be the audience member everyone dreads at a Q&A) leads to sharper instincts — and reading between the lines of a director's answers uncovers the intentions hidden beneath.

Lecture 4 Talking to Criticism: Writing & Reading Animation Reviews 2

- Each participant writes a review of a film of their choice.
- The submitted reviews go back into the blind group critique pool.

Lecture 5 Talking to Criticism: Reading Animation Reviews 2 & Leftover Chats

- Another round of blind group critique on the submitted reviews.
- Anything from the past five weeks that needs a closer look gets picked back up in a quick focused mini-lecture.

This program will be held in conjunction with "Animation Writing and Conversation", an educational program that provides an opportunity to engage in writing and discussions about animation. It is aimed for students who have completed the Animation Writing and Conversation program. The students will meet the directors and see the films at the festival.
