Synopsis

Jaeho takes a role, Perseus in the Greek and Roman myth-based play [Medusa]. While practicing, he falls into the thought that the Medusa sculpture looks like his former girlfriend Heejoo. He realizes that he can’t concentrate on praticing because he keep recalling the bygone days when he was with Heejoo. He tries to escape from the memories, but it ties Jaeho up like a snake. …

Director's Comment

This work is about Overcoming Trauma. Here, trauma is represented as Medusa, in the context of making us impotent like being tied up by snakes. Therefore, Medusa can be interpreted as Heejoo from a superficial perspective, but in fact, it symbolizes Jaeho’s emotional baggage. The scene where Perseus kills Medusa is when the current Jaeho abandons himself from the past, who can’t get away from the memory with Heejoo.

The factor that is constantly emphasized in the image is “circle,” which shows Jaeho’s mental state trapped in the memory with Heejoo, in that it has no ending point and is a circulating figure. The circle relates itself with another symbolic element “photograph” by using the image of camera lens and aperture. Photographs are used in the same context as Medusa, which makes dynamic living creatures an inanimate object in a static state, in terms of stopping a moment in time.

The narrative is proceeded with a theatrical composition in an abstract space to give the viewer room to project themselves. This work is created in the hope that the viewer free themselves from the trauma by following Jaeho’s expereience, and feels the end of the video as a new beginning.
