Synopsis

One afternoon, I happened to encounter a lizard shedding its tail and scurrying away. Somehow, I found myself strangely identifying with that tail. Perhaps a person is made up of two selves, and maybe I’ve survived by autotomizing a part of myself, just like that lizard.

Director's Comment

Humans are multilayered and complex beings. They can be both emotional and rational, logical yet impulsive—like a boy who loves heavy metal but also cherishes cat plushies. However, modern society often fails to accept individuals who embody multiple, coexisting facets. Just as a lizard severs part of its body in a moment of crisis, we, too, may sacrifice parts of ourselves in order to survive. In this sense, [Autotomy] sheds light on the process of discarding an essential part of our identity—another version of ourselves that we are forced to deny for the sake of social survival. This exploration seeks to bring that lost self back into focus.

Detailed description

Everyone has had the experience of cutting away a piece of themselves, whether large or small. Most people have this common life experience when they demand sacrifices of themselves to gain something in the future. With vivid colors suggestive of blood and a simple black and white palette, we are reminded that our present lives come at the cost of the pain of tearing away parts of ourselves.
