Synopsis

"Mask the Flower" is one of the featured works in the animation anthology "Pass49e," based on a mysterious novel consisting of 49 characters. Chubb, a former professional wrestler from Mexico, had a glorious career but retired after sustaining an injury, leading a disillusioned life. One day, Chubb decides to rob a bank, but the mask he puts on is the same one he used during his wrestling days. This story portrays the small hopes of an awkward yet endearing man.

Program Note

A former pro wrestler with a grumbling stomach robs a small bank in Mexico. He runs into a boy who is holding a wrestler doll that looks just like him. The boy watches everything with longing eyes. The former wrestler tries to escape with the money but bumps into the boy’s grandmother. He politely helps her to her feet, showing that he isn’t cut out to be a bad guy. The main character has shown his lowest moment to a fan who has seen him at his highest point. He runs away thinking about the boy who is still cheering for him, and his eyes are hollow and empty. Listening to the acoustic guitar melody, we can’t really hate this sweet protagonist. When I see him, I want to cheer him on just like the little boy did. That is, as long as he obeys the law!
