Synopsis

A young Burmese woman who was trafficked to China and sold into marriage tells her story. Based on the real-life protagonist’s own words and beautifully rendered in pen-and-ink, this animation portrays a woman torn between her love for the child she was forced to bear and her longing for the country to which she may never be able to return.

Program Note

The main character left Myanmar to go to China in order to earn money, but she was tricked by her boyfriend and his mother. She was sold to a man in the countryside to be his wife. The man who bought her became violent when he was angry. To find her way home, she studied the Chinese language by watching TV. When she had a daughter, she smiled happily. She promised to help her daughter live her own life rather than what she might choose for her. Based on a true story, this documentary doesn’t dwell on the life of a victim. Instead, it shows the journey of a protagonist who dreams of returning home with her daughter, and it also reveals the brutal reality experienced by thousands of women from Myanmar who are sold to China each year.
