At a midnight highway rest area, the weary travelers each quietly relax their minds. A brief moment spent with complete strangers is lonely yet somehow comforting.

The night bus is full of sleepy passengers. Even after midnight, the highway rest area is full of vehicles. A Night at the Rest Area shows scenes of the highway rest area where the long-haul bus takes a brief break. While the bus is parked, the woken passengers run to the bathroom and convenience store. People’s breath can be seen in the bitter wind on this cold winter night. The travelers are spaced apart on the benches and in front of the vending machine. Regardless of their personal closeness or distance, they respect one another’s space during this time they spend together. It’s a lovely film that offers a truly positive affirmation of the social concept of “nunchi.” LEE Kyunghwa
