Synopsis

Mountain the dog, the guardian of a mountain village, falls in love with a visiting young woman. When she leaves, he ventures into the City to find her. The faceless sky-high buildings, crowds of people, automobiles… all of this combined overwhelms the Hero so much that he forgets even who he is and why he is there. But the herd of sheep from the village comes to his rescue.

Program Note

Like childhood fairy tales hiding violent truths, this film has a similar uneasiness. The subdued watercolors and the constant sound of the ocarina leave us with a damp feeling in the heart. The story of the dog searching for a girl begins as a fairy tale but ends in the real world. I held out hope while watching the film, and I wondered if modern audiences might wish for a fairy tale ending. We want stories to be a respite from the dampness of reality.
