Program Note
Felix and Madeleine are bowed fiddler crabs playing music in the wetlands. Together, they become a family after overcoming a sudden ordeal. That is how Sonny is born. To protect him from a dangerous world, Felix stops running away and faces the crisis. There are conflicts and sacrifices to be made as they try to protect their offspring from the environment. The film goes beyond the simple morality of good and evil as it explores complex and nuanced emotions. The strong desire to save someone in a harsh world, the courage to go on living, could these feelings resonate in our own world? Like the powerful sensation of taking your first step in a mudflat, the crabs’ lively movements leave us with a deep lingering feeling.
