The protagonist's gaze as they wander Monkey Hill passes indifferently over unremarkable moments and idle musings, and the off-beat humor that blooms in those gaps draws a quiet, involuntary smile. Drawing on the romance of an era when a blank expression was its own form of beauty, the film deploys an almost black-comedy-like economy of expression to showcase the appeal of understated humor.
