Synopsis

A sculptor with Alzheimer’s goes on a self-healing voyage on the river Lethe after his death, experiencing a cycle of remembering and forgetting as he seeks the memories of himself and his daughter.

Program Note

Lethe is the river of oblivion — one of the five rivers flowing through Hades' underworld. A father suffering from Alzheimer's is already, in all likelihood, crossing the river Lethe. The river flows between worlds, dividing the living from the dead. The father, once a sculptor, spent his life giving form to space through his art. The shadow play he shared with his young daughter in years past was, in its own way, a kind of sculpture — made briefly from time and light. Now, the sculptures he has left behind float like buoys on a river of forgetting. And his daughter, in turn, shapes time and light and shadow once more — presenting before us a sculpture in time, in the form of animation.
