Program Note

The phenakistoscope, the zoetrope, the praxinoscope — these are precinematic devices, and they create, unmistakably, the illusion of movement. People once called them ""devices of wonder"" or ""optical toys."" Technology has since advanced at a dazzling pace: wars are now broadcast live, tragic atrocities have become simulacra resembling video games, and social media algorithms amplify fake news and confirmation bias. Paradoxically, it is precisely against today's accelerated technologies of illusion and deception that the director returns to these precinematic devices — to make animation, to document fear and anxiety, and to hold onto a glimmer of hope.
