Synopsis

In a world where balloons grow with each use of language and take on distinct shapes depending on the language, an anxious novelist facing creative struggles and an uncertain future writes about a protagonist living in a foreign city, navigating linguistic barriers and a sense of alienation. The novelist’s halting writing process unfolds in quiet parallel with the protagonist’s difficult adaptation, mirroring one another.

Director's Comment

“Weight of Air” looks at the solitude we carry in everyday life through the visual motif of balloons that hold language. Within language exist both an imposed loneliness and a productive solitude that one chooses for the sake of creation, and these two states intersect throughout the work. The film reflects on the time one passes through alone — and on the invisible accumulation of those moments that gradually strengthens our existence.

Program Note

A 2D animation blending pencil-drawn line textures, muted low-saturation tones, and generous negative space. The film's real strength lies in its visual imagination — its ability to translate the invisible, words and silence, anxiety and solitude, into shapes we can see before us. Images that rise, swell, and sink through the air let the audience physically sense the weight carried within the act of communication. The structure, too, is finely crafted, layering two separate timelines into a single emotional register, so that beneath the screen's quiet restraint, a deep resonance quietly gathers.
