Synopsis

In a world where people live with bodies divided in half, a half-girl named Bani must find and kill her other half to become whole, just like the other members in her family. Haunted by the memory of her father, who lost his sanity after merging without killing his other half, Bani sets out on her journey scared of killing and becoming one. In a remote house, Bani meets her other half Gari, a kind and innocent girl who simply misses her father who disappeared after leaving to find his other half. Bani realizes that Gari’s father is the same man as her own. Stricken with guilt, she nevertheless deceives Gari, using information on her father as bait, and prepares for the fusion. As they merge and begin to share each other’s memories, Gari learns the truth and gets enraged. Unable to bear her guilt and fear, Bani tries to separate with a pair of scissors, but their half-bodies pull toward each other against their will.  At last, one of them dies, and the unified daughter steps outside the house to face the father who has been waiting.

Director's Comment

To live as a whole being is a brutal and merciless form of growth, one that demands sacrifice.

Growing as a human being entails the meaning that sometimes we should be able to kill ourselves.

Program Note

Dark, cool tones ripple uneasily across every scene, drawing the fable's tension taut. This world, shaped by a grotesque imagination, is strange and unsettling — yet beneath its surface lies an entirely universal question: what does it mean to become whole, and what must we lose in order to become one? The film cuts sharply into the shadow of violence woven through identity and relationship, using the language of fable, and holds the audience fast in images where the pure and the cruel cling together as if fused into a single body. A chill that lingers like a physical sensation long after the screening ends — that is the power this film holds.
