Program Note

Rendering the universal human experience of meeting and parting through a semiotic imagination, this intriguing film translates the time a man and woman once shared into the symbols "+" and "-," visualizing the distance and warmth within their relationship. A tightly constructed layout and animating convey the two characters' story with sensory clarity, needing no dialogue at all. The way the film paradoxically holds the quiet sorrow of a love left unfulfilled within the symbols "+" and "-" is an aesthetic entirely its own. The afterimage left behind where love once resided goes beyond a simple romance between two people — it invites us to contemplate the "traces of existence" left by those who entered another's life, added to it for a season, and then departed.
