Director's Comment

As we grow up, we often discover new feelings and desires that can be confusing. In a society where people are divided by many kinds of boundaries, those who don't fit in can feel especially vulnerable. But no one belongs completely to just one side.

Through this story, I hope people will think about the lives of minorities and marginalized people, and also reflect on how we can accept our own desires instead of seeing the world in simple black-and-white terms.

Program Note

A pink rhinoceros rises up, out of nowhere, into a boy's quiet everyday life. This enormous creature, forcing its way out through some cramped space, is met not with a rush of cool freedom but with the cold, watchful stare of sparrows. Rhino Issue traces the confusion of a boy going through puberty through increasingly bold visual direction. In the moment vivid fantasy tangles with dark unease, we come to see the boy's world through sensation, not language. Maybe growing up is just this — grappling, body to body, with your own rhinoceros.
