Synopsis

Director's Comment

This film draws on personal impressions and experiences from the time since I moved abroad to study animation. My attempts to observe and understand the people I love, within an unfamiliar environment, ended up bringing me back, instead, to moments of confronting a lack within myself that I couldn't fully understand. The Investigator keeps asking questions, one after another, yet never arrives at a clear answer — and doesn't even know why she keeps asking.

Moving from place to place, the Investigator speaks with residents who each carry their own distinct appearance and character. The blue words the townspeople speak read, to the Investigator — who communicates in pink — as a foreign language, difficult to understand. The different materials and techniques used in each scene are the means by which the director's own personal and artistic interpretation of this town could be expressed in the way that suited it best.

I hope that watching this film also gives audiences a chance to reflect on their own ways of understanding others, and themselves.

Program Note

Why do we scurry around, chasing after unfamiliar places, meeting new people, and gathering up interesting phenomena and environments? Even when the world rarely answers our expectations, perhaps we can't stop this noisy pursuit because it's a struggle to fill an unbearable emptiness at the core of our existence! Swept along by dimension-hopping visuals and offbeat questions, we follow the story and, before we know it, find ourselves face to face with unexpected emotion. Equally impressive is the visual language that lets the audience identify so readily with characters made of nothing more than simple shapes.
