Synopsis
Director's Comment
The intention was to convey that striving to live a good life requires greater effort and courage. Just as a good person is vulnerable to the hurt of others, a hedgehog, too, becomes vulnerable to its surroundings when its spines diminish, and maintaining this state requires considerable energy. Furthermore, the work emphasizes that growth can be achieved not only through solo effort but also through experiences and interactions with others. Detailed elements include the sculpture's scars decreasing towards the end, the hedgehog's actions being triggered by an apple with the motif of good and evil, the caterpillar is a creature that is wary of its surroundings like a hedgehog and is also an object that causes and suggests the hedgehog's growth, the blacksmith in the beginning of the work is also in charge of sales (service job) and therefore has no thorns on his arms due to the nature of his job (example: smiling face of a service job), and the dream scene in the middle of the work is intended to exaggerate the fact that his thorns harm the surroundings.

Program Note
A hedgehog who hates its own quills — what a premise. Winning us over with its adorable art style and fluid animation, this film prompts us to reflect on the quills we all carry deep inside. The protagonist's “quills” are threatening, yet ultimately a part of the body one has no choice but to carry along. Visualizing this double-edged complex from multiple angles, the director invites us to see ourselves in the struggle against our own inherent flaws. Even I hate my own quills sometimes.
