Synopsis

In a desolate garbage dump, a broom and a dustpan are thrown away. Unlike the broom, which keeps carrying out its tasks with a positive spirit, the dustpan retreats in despair over its abandoned fate. To encourage the dustpan—and to find a way to live again—the broom begins rummaging through the dump day and night without rest.

Director's Comment

This film intended to depict the process of beings who have lost their usefulness and been abandoned rediscovering their own value and seeking hope within despair. I hope that this film becomes an opportunity for the audience to deeply think once more about the true meaning of 'usefulness' and the value of existence.

Program Note

A broom and dustpan, once used to sweep away trash, now find themselves discarded at the dump. The dustpan hides away inside a box, but the broom keeps going through the changing seasons, gathering up whatever's been left behind nearby. In winter, buried in snow, what he ends up building draws the dustpan back out of the dark and into the world again. A story of worn-out tools bringing each other's lives back into motion goes beyond simple cuteness, calling to mind those pushed to society's edges. Wit that looks at familiar objects with fresh eyes, paired with warm, tactile stop-motion, carries a will to endure setbacks and the warmth of solidarity.
